How Our Container Homes Are Approved
Housing counseling certification and structural approval are two different things. Here is the approval path every Outback build actually goes through — the one your building department, lender and insurer care about.
Engineer-Stamped Drawings
Structural plans sealed by a licensed professional engineer, prepared for submittal to your local building department.
Built To Code
Fabricated to the applicable IBC/IRC and state modular criteria for wind, snow, seismic and thermal performance in your jurisdiction.
Third-Party Inspection
Independent inspection during fabrication, with documentation supplied in your closeout package.
Permit-Ready Submittal Set
A complete plan set — architectural, structural, electrical and plumbing sheets — delivered with your unit for permitting.
Scope of Certification — Please Read
HUD certification applies to housing counseling services only. It does not certify, endorse, approve, warrant or inspect any shipping container, container home, modular structure or other product sold by Outback Shipping Containers.
Outback Shipping Containers is a container supplier and fabricator. We are not a HUD-approved housing counseling agency, a lender, a mortgage broker, a law firm or a licensed financial advisor, and nothing on this page is legal, tax, credit or investment advice.
Structural compliance for any unit is determined by your local building department, the applicable state or county codes and the engineer of record for your site. Financing decisions are made solely by the lender.
We do not charge for referrals to counseling resources and we receive no compensation from any counseling agency.
Housing Counseling FAQ
Does HUD certify or approve container homes?
No. HUD certification in this context applies to housing counseling services and counselors only. It does not certify, endorse, approve or warrant any container, structure or product sold by Outback Shipping Containers. Structural approval always comes from your local building department and the engineer of record for your project.
How are Outback container homes approved then?
Every Outback container home is built to code and approved through the structural channel that actually governs housing: engineer-stamped structural drawings sealed by a licensed professional engineer, construction to the applicable IBC/IRC and state modular criteria, third-party inspection during fabrication, and a permit set prepared for submittal to your local building department. That is the approval that lets your unit be permitted, occupied and insured.
What is a HUD Certified Housing Counselor?
A HUD Certified Housing Counselor is an individual who has passed the HUD Housing Counselor Certification Examination and works for a HUD-approved housing counseling agency. Their role is to give impartial guidance on homeownership, budgeting, rental issues and avoiding foreclosure.
Is housing counseling free?
Counseling through HUD-approved agencies is generally free or low cost. Outback Shipping Containers does not charge for pointing you to these resources, and we receive no fee for referrals.
Do I have to buy a container to get help?
No. The guidance is informational. You are never required to purchase anything from us to be referred to housing counseling resources.
Does counseling guarantee loan approval?
No. Counseling helps you prepare and understand your options. Credit decisions are made independently by lenders based on their own underwriting.
How do I find a HUD-approved agency myself?
You can search HUD's national directory of approved housing counseling agencies directly, or call the HUD interactive voice system, at any time. We are happy to point you in the right direction.
